A&C and the Sad Sack Sourdough

The creative juices at Universal were grinding to a halt when Abbott and Costello made Lost In Alaska. The film is obviously taken from the classic Road To Utopia that Bing and Bob did at Paramount a few years back.

The Dottie Lamour role in this film went to Mitzi Green, but the boys aren't fighting over here. She's the squeeze of Tom Ewell a poor sad sack sourdough who wants to kill himself because she gave him in the air. Bud and Lou begin the film as volunteer firemen in San Francisco who save Ewell from drowning himself though Costello nearly goes down in the effort. Then they accompany Ewell to Alaska to maybe get a share of his gold if they can straighten his love life out.

Ewell's a popular guy in Skagway, everyone wants to see him dead because of his strike. Keeping him alive is a full time job for Bud and Lou.

The best routine in the film is Bud putting one over on Lou when they agree to take one hour shifts keeping tabs on Ewell. Bud sleeps for an hour then Lou wakes him, but Bud just puts the clock ahead an hour and then wakes Lou after about a few seconds. Poor Costello can't figure out why he's so drowsy. I wish the rest of the film were as good.

Universal no longer was being kept alive by Abbott&Costello, their box office was assured by a crop of new leading men like Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, and Jeff Chandler. The quality of their films declined in the Fifties and Lost In Alaska is an example of same.

Fading stars breathe life into artificial murder mystery set on Broadway

No matter how pretentious the cocktail party, never escape by asking another wallflower out for dinner. That was theatrical producer Van Heflin's mistake when, on the terrace of Broadway diva Ginger Rogers' apartment, he took pity on hopeful young writer Peggy Ann Garner. Just a few months later, she was found hanged in the bathroom of his apartment.

It was all very innocent, though. While his wife, another star on the Rialto (Gene Tierney), was away tending to her ailing mother, Heflin let Garner use his place as a daytime office so she could write in quiet comfort. (Well, not so quiet: She listens to `The Dance of the Seven Veils' from Salome incessantly and fixates on a line from the opera: `The mystery of love is stronger than the mystery of death.') But when it turns out not only that she was pregnant but that she was murdered, the police sensibly enough find in Heflin their prime suspect.

Black Widow, written and directed by Nunnally Johnson, assembles an impressive array of Hollywood luminaries across whose resumés long shadows were beginning to creep. Along with Rogers, Tierney and Heflin, there's George Raft as a police detective, Otto Krueger as Garner's actor uncle and Reginald Gardiner as Rogers' whipped spouse. It's an ensemble-cast, 40s-high-style mystery movie, made about a decade too late but not too much the worse for that (even allowing for its color and Cinemascope).

Heflin's technically the center of the movie – the patsy racing around to prove his innocence. But the meatier parts go to the women, except for Tierney, all but wasted in the recessive role of the elegant but dutiful wife. Garner makes her abrupt exit early in the movie, but returns in startlingly revisionist flashbacks. And, as the grande dame (named `Carlotta,' perhaps in homage to another grande dame of the stage, Marie Dressler's Carlotta Vance in Dinner at Eight?), Rogers strides around in big-ticket outfits and fakes a highfalutin drama-queen accent. For most of the movie it seems like ill-fitting role for the essentially proletarian Rogers, but it's shrewdly written, and near the end she shows her true colors, becoming, briefly, sensational.

Like Repeat Performance and All About Eve, Black Widow uncoils in a high-strung, back-stabbing theatrical milieu that's now all but vanished – all the money and the glamour have moved west. (Not to put too fine a point on it, but the tiny part of a struggling Greenwich Village actor is taken by television producer Aaron Spelling, now one of the richest men in Hollywood.) The movie cheats a little by withholding information essential to our reading of the characters, but it's a forgivable feint; the characters are all `types' anyhow. There is, however, one baffling omission – there's not a single widow in the plot.

Interesting film version of Donizetti's opera

La Favorita is a Donizetti opera I do like very much. When it comes to Donizetti operas, my two favourites are Lucia Di Lammermoor and L'Elisir D'Amore. La Favorita is not in the same league as those two, I've always thought that the story is not the easiest to follow. However, Donizetti's music is beautiful, Arturo Toscanini said it best when he said "every note is a masterpiece". This film version is very interesting. It is not perfect, the lip-synch is sloppily done but I do find that common in filmed opera, some of the direction has a stage-bound feel to it so there are moments where some of the drama is on the unmotivated side and I do think that Palmira Vitali's quivery timbre, especially on the high notes, is going to take some getting used to. There are also some inevitable cuts to the score, considering it is a filmed version. I'm glad that O Mio Fernando and Spirito Gentil were left intact, but was done to the cabaletta in Vieni Amor was disappointing(only 20 or so seconds of it was performed, I had no problem though with the performance though). However, the costumes and sets do look beautiful, the orchestral playing suitably lush and the conducting full of authority. Sophia Loren is radiant, and Gino Sinimberghi is a dashing Fernando, with Piero Sardelli having an effortless ring to his voice. Ines is sympathetic also, while of the cast the most impressive was the noble and resonantly sung Baldassare of Alfredo Colella. Paolo Silveri is very commanding as Alfonso, and his Vieni Amor is very touching. Overall, very interesting. 7/10 Bethany Cox

F.B.I. melodrama stars Broderick Crawford as agent...

Based on a novel by The Gordons called "Case File: F.B.I.", this is a semi-documentary style crime drama from Columbia starring BRODERICK CRAWFORD as a diligent F.B.I. agent John Ripley assigned to crack a few unsolved cases when a fellow agent on the job is killed in the line of duty.

RUTH ROMAN, MARISA PAVAN and MARTHA HYER are the three women connected to the cases, all of whom give good performances but Pavan is particularly touching as a blind woman.

The documentary style is nicely handled and there's a twist at the end that came as a real surprise to me.

Not great, but an interesting example of satisfactory film noir.

Estelita pretends to be Manuela, leading to lots of mayhem.

Sisters Estelita and Manuela are to go away to college, but Manuela wants to elope! Estelita agrees to cover for her by pretending they are identical twins! What follows is a comedy of errors, with a happy ending.

For its time, this was a clean and entertaining film. Since I watched it at that time, the fact that I remember it is telling. In today's PC climate, probably the spanking scene would have to go!

The handbag scene also stayed in my mind's eye. Estelita has a handbag with a curvy "E" on it. To turn herself into Manuela, she just rotates the initial through ninety degrees to become an "M".

The actress Estelita must have been famous, as in one scene, where she sings, there is a poster outside describing her as "The Toast of Pan-Am". Maybe they sold tickets for that scene to finance the film!
